Rococo-Inspired Typography Final – InDesign 2016
This poster is one of the final projects I had the pleasure of working on during my design minor. The task was to create a recruitment poster for the program, and each one of us chose a different art period to use as inspiration for the project. I chose to use rococo style as my inspiration, because it reminds me of the beginning of an old familiar book.
The ornate decorations at the top and along the side were created with characters such as question marks, parenthesis, brackets, and a couple numbers. The aqua “D” repeated throughout the design was hand-carved and stamped, and then scanned in for use in the poster. It was so much fun, and I adore the idea of mixing traditional art into digital projects. A little can go a long way with traditional effects, but as someone who started out with traditional materials, I look forward to experimenting more with traditional and digital mixtures.
Everyone in class designed a poster with similar phrases–the idea was to draw interest to the design program offered by the college. When students hear “graphic design”, they may think of logos and websites and modern, tech-y projects. I wanted to show that the program is so much more than that. Design can be a place for people who are interested in taking their passion for art and using it to make the world a more beautiful place.”Graphic Designer” makes me think of a well-dressed modern man. My design reflected the fact that our class was all women, and it was a great place for people who may have more of a traditional art background.
This piece is something I am quite proud of. The colors are soft, yet bright, and though there is a lot of white space, it does not give the appearance of being sterile or cold. Had I seen a poster like this my first year at school, I would have signed up then and there for the program.
